Bird-droppings were drying on the empty bench he occupied. He thought that strange since all the birds had died months ago. The authorities had completely sealed off the city. Citizens were not allowed to leave, and no one was allowed to enter.
He had enrolled in the Sanitary Squad as a volunteer and not because he was a savant in the field of epidemics. His duties revolved around seeing that houses were kept in a proper hygienic state. He also compiled the daily death count. He tried not to think about his wife who was trapped outside.

You capture the surreal situations we seem to be finding ourselves in more and more very well.

I agree with Sandra. Once upon a time, this would have felt like fiction. Now it is far too real and very well written, Danny.

Before Covid this would have been in the realms of dystopian fiction. But we can believe anything now.

You have given me a reminder of however precarious life can be and how vulnerable humans are to the unknown waiting to strike.

Hard to click “Like” on this one (given its subject matter) but there aren’t enough I’s in L -I-I-I-KE to express my admiration for the teller’s talent. My hat is off. AND: perfect photo.
