He picked the rental car up at Heathrow Airport. Upon entering he saw, as expected, the steering wheel on the right. Before he left the U.S. he had obtained his international driver’s license. The drive to Stonehenge was seventy-five miles. Enough time to get acquainted with the English roads.
He booked the sunset tour to avoid the crowds. He immediately fell in love with its ascetic beauty. His brain was still trying to process everything he had seen. This distraction led to a fatal mistake as he exited the historic landmark. He looked left instead of right for oncoming traffic.
Such a simple mistake with possible costly results. Years ago, I drove while staying in Australia and had a very near miss. I let my husband drive from then on. (Haha)

Such an easy mistake to make. A lifelong habit is hard to change.

oh oh … And … yeah, I almost got run over in London when I looked in the wrong direction before trying to cross the road … as a pedestrian … The drivers were NOT amused …

this reminds me of the funny incident that happened to me when i visited tokyo for the first time. after sitting in the rear of a bus at the airport, i almost fainted when it started moving without a driver. then i realized later he was driving on the right side. 🙂

Mine (not fatal) was in Okinawa every time I turned a corner I’d move back to the right side. Can you imagine that place when one day they all moved left?
This is why I end every blog post with “look both ways.” 🙂

At least he looked in one direction ,more than many seem to do these days! I’ve visited Stonehenge a couple times. It’s always a thrill to see it.
Well done.

Another bump on the A303. I made a similar mistake when driving in France!

This happens quite often. It’s easy to do, especially on non-busy roads because there are no cars to remind you. We do so many things on auto-pilot.

Would you have the same problems driving here?

Yes. My brain wouldn’t except the “right” side even after a nearly a year. 😀

A common problem for British drivers going abroad and vice versa. A shame his visit ended in such a disaster!

I wonder how often this really happens–not so much the fatal part, though.

Actually it happen to me. Less the fatal part as you say. I also had an accident on a roundabout. Needless to say that was the last time I drove anywhere outside the U.S.
