Police here have recovered 98 storm drain grates that had been swiped from neighborhoods around the Raleigh area. These are heavy iron covers which measure 2 feet by 3 feet and weigh more than 100 pounds each. The grates are worth $15 to $20 each when scrapped.

Three questions come to mind:

1. Who in the world would steal storm drain grates?
2. Why?
3. Who is dumb enough to buy them?

I mean are they going to stand on street corners with long trench coats and then show the grates to prospective buyers? “Psst…hey buddy, want to buy a slightly  used storm drain grate. Like new condition!”

I guess it gives new meaning to the phrase “he just dropped out of sight”.
