They were veterans of many a canoe trips in Northern Michigan. Numerous trips on the Au Sable river in their minds made them professionals even though the river only drops 650 feet (200 m) from its source at the junction of Kolka and Bradford Creeks to its end approximately 138 miles east.
They described this river to their guide in Argentina and asked him to pick a river to test their skills. “Iguazu River”, their guide informed them sounded similar.
As their canoe departed the landing the guide shouted, “Be careful with that first waterfall, it’s a killer.”
