I always looked forward to it. My mother would come out of the house with a basket full of laundry. Draped across her shoulder was a colorful bag made by her mother that contained many wooden clothespins.
The wire clothespin lines ran between three wooden poles spaced evenly apart. I had my sponge, already watered, poised for action. I always waited until I got her nod to proceed. Stretching as high as I could I grasped a line at the beginning of the end pole and with a loud “Geronimo” launched myself at full speed towards the next pole.
I can still hear my mother laugh!
I like the indulgence the boy’s mother showed in letting him have fun that way.
