The lake is beginning to refreeze. The new ice will bond with the existing base and very soon they will be locked in until the spring thaw. The family will sleep more, eat less, and try to survive this unexpected situation on rations they had brought for a short reprieve from civilization gone wild. The temperature will fall below zero tonight. They will burn fence posts to keep warm as they have already made the house bare over the last few nights by burning all the simple furniture that the cabin contained. The horses sense something sinister .
Great story!

I think there is a risk that horses will be used in a new way… but I guess the alternative is starving to death

Run, horses! On the other hand… starving out in the cold won’t be a joy for the horses either and there are likely wolves, bears… life is cruel.

I get the feeling it’s not going to end well for the horses. I guess needs must… Nice take.
