To Break a Promise?

During thirty years of living together they had a few disagreements. There were the bleary eyes; the slurred words, the repeating of sentences. The sound of “I don’t love you anymore” echoing in his ears. All the signs were there.

He had walked out on Tom before. Those were short periods of times when he just needed to get away. He especially liked the solitude the of nearby beach.

When he left he always told Tom he would return, as he did this morning.

Slowly walking into the water he realized this would be a promise he would break.
