Tears In Heaven

This post is written for Friday Fictioneers. The challenge is to write a complete story…beginning, middle, and end…in 100 words or less.  My story follows the picture prompt.

The circus had left town the day before. It was heaven for a little boy of four. Elephants, clowns, the tall man on stilts all made my little boy laugh. It was good therapy for someone like me returning to a sober life. I so much wanted to be a good father.

Little boys can run with abandon whether it be in a one story home or in a fifty-three  condo building. Leaving him with a housekeeper was nothing out of the ordinary. She just left the window open. Not her fault.

Forty nine floors is a big fall.

  1. I don’t know why there seem to be so many dead kids this week. Not your fault of course, yours is only one. There is always a high body count in FF but it’s the kids that get to me, especially when the story is true. I remember this event so well, it was so dreadful. Good story though.

    • I remember it well also. One of the few times I knew right away what I would write. I have no idea why that would happen. But that is what FF is about. Interesting that so many of us would pick up on that thread. Perhaps we all could benefit from seeing a shrink.

  2. I heard it was the janitor who left the window open. These things happen so quickly. It must have been dreadful for both Clapton and Lory. Nicely done, with just the right note of bleakness.
