Sunday Photo Fiction — Wailing Well

Sunday Photo Fiction

Every week on a Sunday, a new photo is used as a prompt for Flash Fiction challenge using around 200 words based on that image. Your story does not have to be exactly what the item in the photo is as long as there is at least a reference to it.

My story starts after the photo below.

He was on vacation in northern Vermont. Searching the internet he had  found an out-of-the-way cabin for rent about half  way up Burke Mountain.

Today he  had asked the  young clerk at the country store  if there  were some places  he could take some typical North Eastern fall color shots. She had recommended The Mountain View  Farm about  2 miles up on Darling Hill Road.

The farm was not hard to find. A very large old abandoned red house with old-fashioned coffin windows. To top it off there was the quintessential wishing well centered  on the expansive front yard. He thought this would  make  the perfect picture that captured  the essence of the quaint countryside of Vermont.

Framing the large house with the wishing well in front was fairly easy using his 75-300 mm Canon lens. Changing to a 18-55 mm lens he moved closer to put the well in focus with the house  as a background soft blur.

As  he approached the well he froze. The sound coming from the well was unmistakable. It was the mournful  wail of a new-born baby.
